Level Plane
New York City apartments are often barely suited for human occupation; they are cramped, often in disrepair and structural disarray. Not the kind of place you normally want to show your parents after you graduate college, and a far from romantic starting point for an independent record label.

Level-Plane records was founded in 1997 with the intention of having a name and mailing address to put on the back cover of the first 7” by SAETIA. The idea that the label would grow to it's current size and enable me to release records for artists as diverse as Muslimgauze, The One AM Radio and Lickgoldensky was something I could never have imagined.

The label has seemingly taken on a life of it's own and has definitely grown past anything I could have ever expected. We're nearing 100 releases and despite the seemingly endless work and occasional frustration I'm thankful for the fact that I'm more excited about being involved with music now than I ever have been before.

Playing in bands and running this label has given me the opportunity to meet some of the most talented and creative people in underground music.

LABEL NEWS
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

>Where can I find your records?
Our main distributor is Mordam Records. They carry all of our currently available records. They will handle all wholesale and direct to store orders that you need. They also do a small bit of mailorder. But you might be better served ordering straight through us or some other mailorder-specific store. If your local record store doesn't have our stuff in stock, asking them to order our records definitely helps us out and gives others in your area the chance to be exposed to what we're doing.

Our releases are also available through these resources as well:

>Can I get some of your records to play on my radio show?
This is a good question. Right now, we have sent several of our releases over to AAM for Sunday Service and plan to send more. If you currently receive records from them, and would like to get our stuff as well...email Sara and ask her. If you run a specialty show or a station not serviced by AAM, then please email LP Radio with your request. I will ask that you send at least 2-3 months of playlists. So that we can make sure it is worthwhile.
We typically do not send vinyl only releases to radio service through AAM. B/c of this, I am planning to compile a list of radio stations that we can service directly with vinyl only releases.

>Can I get some of your records to review for my zine/website?
Please email mw and ask. I will see what I can do.

>What's your policy on demos?
Demos are welcome. We listen to everything we get, and we get a shitload. Having said that, you need to take some things into account:

  • For bands that are interested in working with us: CDs are preferred. Tapes are acceptable, but my stereo is screwey and doesn't like tapes.
  • We have yet to release something from a demo that we've been sent out of nowhere.
  • do not email us MP3s or links to your purevolume.com site. We don't have the time to deal with this and we don't.
  • Have some pride in what you're doing. A blank CDR with a boombox recording and an email address scrawled on it and a doesn't paint a particularly compelling picture of your band as one that's motivated. Putting no effort into you demo speaks volumes and just as much effort will be put into checking it out.
  • Sadly, neither of us gets the chance to respond to everyone who sends in a demo. It's not because we didn't like it, or didn't feel it's worth our time, but we deal with the bands on our roster first and foremost and if there's time later on (see the comment at the beginning about doing mailorder until 2am) we write back everyone we can.

    >Do you have the "    " record in stock?
If it's listed on our page, probably. You should ALWAYS list alternates. Even if we do say yes, there are times that we'll get multiple orders for the same record. Some stuff blows out, some stuff sits. We're still getting the hang of it. Paypal orders are generally your best bet to get dibs on stuff. Hopefully we'll have a non-Paypal way of taking credit cards, but that's a ways off.

    >I want to order this record, but I don't get paid for 2 weeks. Can you hold it?
Sorry, we've held stuff in the past only to have people flake and we get stuck with odd copies of records. For the sake of bookkeeping and our sanity, we can't do this.

    >I sent my order in last week, did you get it/where are my records?
We can't write back to everyone who asks us to let them know if we got their order. Understand that the postal service sucks and the order doesn't materialize in our PO Box the instant you send it. If you want to make sure we got it, use delivery confirmation. It's $.50 extra.
95% of orders go out within 2 days of us getting them. Once they're out of my hands, they're out of my hands. We mail orders out media rate, which is supposed to take 7-10 days, but there have been times it's taken a month. If you sent your order in more than a month ago and you still haven't seen it, then ask us.
If you live overseas, we send orders out surface unless you're willing to pay the actual airmail postage. Surface can take up to 2 months. Contact us if you want your order sent air, we'll figure postage out and tell you how much the postage is.

    >Will you distro my new release?
email us @ distro@level-plane.com if you want to mail us something to consider for our distro. Please don't mail us multiple copies of something without clearing it with us first. That's annoying as hell and we've run out of room. Like any distro, we mark up the records we carry and also factor in postage. Don't charge us $7 for a record then ask us to mailorder it for $8. If you want the prices low, sell it to us low.

    >I have some sort of gripe. I'm going to make snide comments on the internet
Who doesn't. Go nuts. I'm not sure what you hope to accomplish tho.

    >My band wants to play NYC/Philly/Virginia, can you help us?
We don't have anything to do with setting up shows so we're unfortunately not that much help in this area.
